Business Secretary Vince Cable today performed one of the biggest Lib Dem U-turns of the coalition to date, with his backing of Browne’s proposals to scrap the current cap on university tuition fees. Effectively making way for a free market, universities will be able to charge what they want for students to enrol onto courses from 2012.
This is the pledge that Vince signed in the run up to the election:
“I pledge to vote against any increase in fees in the next parliament and to pressure the government to introduce a fairer alternative”
Today he described Browne’s recommendations as “fair and affordable”.
Remarkable.
