LibDem identity crisis

Mildly amusing skit from TelegraphTV. Good to see the Torygraph hasn’t gone soft in these times of let’s come together coalition politics.

CBI concern over ConDem cuts

CBI chief economic adviser Ian McCafferty looking suitably scared

If the CBI is worried about the effects of ConDem cuts then the rest of us should be terrified. The CBI (champions of business and naturally allied to the Tories) today cautioned that hard-and-fast cuts will impede the economic recovery – and promptly lowered its forecast for UK growth next year from 2.5% to 2.0%.

Cable tells it how it is

ConDem Business Secretary Vince Cable wades into bankers

In a refreshing speech to conference Vince pulled no punches in blaming The City for the current economic crisis. He said: “I make no apology for attacking spivs and gamblers who did more harm to the British economy than Bob Crow (the RMT union leader) could achieve in his wildest Trotskyite fantasies, while paying themselves outrageous bonuses underwritten by the taxpayer. There is much public anger about banks and it is well deserved.”

Cable went on to broaden his critique: “The Government’s agenda is not one of laissez-faire. Markets are often irrational or rigged. So I am shining a harsh light into the murky world of corporate behaviour.”

DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY & CLIMATE CHANGE DECIMATED BY FORTY PER CENT

Chris Huhne on hearing the news...

How is the “greenest government in history” fighting global warming? By merging Buffhuhne’s fledgling Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) with the Treasury, of course!  Mmm. Great bedfellows… Greenpeace is calling the move “sheer insanity”.

NORTH WEST TO BE HIT HARD BY TORY CUTS. AGAIN

Dark days ahead for Liverpool City Council

Another Conservative government. Another raft of cuts and disinvestment for the communities of the North West. What is it with Tory toffs and their sadistic pleasure in seeing the Scouse working class squeal?

AUSTERITY CUTS DUMP IRELAND INTO DOUBLE DIP RECESSION

100 000 Irish took to the steets last year in protest at the planned cuts

The hard-and-fast spending cuts wielded by the Irish Government to try and bring its economy back from the brink have been held up by the ConDem coalition as an example of the need for an age of austerity. Let’s see how quick Osborne and Co are to endorse the Irish experiment now they’re oficially back in recession.

THEY’LL BE NO WHINGING OVER CUTS SAYS NORTHERN IRELAND FINANCE MINISTER

The caring sharing face of Sammy Wilson

Sammy Wilson, Northern Ireland’s Finance Minister, today assuaged peoples fears ahead of his planned spending cuts. Not.

“Pain is inevitable, but however difficult it is going to be, we have to approach it in a constructive way. Wringing our hands or whingeing about it won’t take us anywhere, we have to get on and deal with it. This is what people expect of us; this is what devolution is about.”

PICKLES TO SIT ON SPENDING CUTS STAR CHAMBER

Spending cuts are a laugh-a-minute for our Eric

Communities and Local Goverment Secretary Eric Pickles, a past master of making swingeing cuts since his early days as leader of Bradford Council, is one of the first ministers to cross the finish line to deliver his plans for 25% departmental cuts.

His prize? To sit on the Spending Cuts Star Chamber and kick ministerial arse to make sure other departments are suitably severe in the coming weeks and months.

Nice one Eric!

MIDDLE CLASS FAMILIES PROTECTED FROM CONDEM SPENDING CUTS

We're all in this together? Never a truer word spoken.

This from the Daily Mail: “Coalition policies could undergo a ‘middle class’ audit to ensure they are not hurting hard-working families.”

Don’t you just love that working class families don’t figure… Is it because they’re not working hard enough? Or that they’re all benefit cheats and scroungers?

Or could it be down to the fact that 53% of the coalition cabinet were privately educated and a staggering 23 of the 29 now have personal fortunes in excess of £1m?

DECIMATION OF PUBLIC BODIES BEGINS IN EARNEST

Want to access over 1000 years of history at the National Archive? You'd better be quick

The Torygraph today reports on a leaked document outlining ConDem coalition plans to scrap 177 quangos with a further 94 also under threat.

We all know that quangos often get bad press, and frequently for good reason, and there’s no doubt that some of these bodies are past their sell by date or simply not worth the money.

But take a long hard look at some of the organisations to be canned. Do we really want to wave farewell to the BBC World Service, The National Archives, the UK Film Council and the Forestry Commission?
